Teaching nursing in clinical environments is considered complex and multi‐faceted. Little is known about the role of the clinical nurse educator, specifically the challenges related to transition from clinician, or in some cases, from newly‐graduated nurse to that of clinical nurse educator, as occurs in developing countries. Confidence in the clinical educator role has been associated with successful transition and the development of role competence. There is currently no valid and reliable instrument to measure clinical nurse educator confidence. This study was conducted to develop and psychometrically test an instrument to measure perceived confidence among clinical nurse educators. A multi‐phase, multi‐setting survey design was used. A total of 468 surveys were distributed, and 363 were returned. Data were analyzed using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. The instrument was successfully tested and modified in phase 1, and factorial validity was subsequently confirmed in phase 2. There was strong evidence of internal consistency, reliability, content, and convergent validity of the Clinical Nurse Educator Skill Acquisition Assessment instrument. The resulting instrument is applicable in similar contexts due to its rigorous development and validation process.  相似文献

It is essential to develop easy-to-use sensors towards a better monitoring of food additives so that human health can be positively influenced. A type of critical food additive that is widely used in making soft drinks and diverse foodstuff is called amaranth. This study aimed at presenting a novel Pd/GO nanomaterial-modified screen-printed electrode (Pd/GO/SPE), which is responsible for providing a sensing interface during the process of specifying the electrochemical features of amaranth. The morphology and structure of the Pd/GO nanomaterial was investigated by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. When the optimized conditions was adjusted, Pd/GO/SPE proved to be a capable sensor for conducting a very sensitive sensing towards the amaranth under a common working situation of 575 mV. In this regard, it was embarked on measuring some of the sensor features, including its sensitivity, linear dynamic range, and detection limit for amaranth with the values of 0.0948 μA μM−1, 0.08 μM–360.0 μM and 30.0 nM were obtained, respectively.

Objective

We investigated correlations between residents’ scores on the Jefferson Scale of Empathy (JSE), residents’ perceptions of their empathy during standardized-patient encounters, and the perceptions of standardized patients.

Methods

Participants were 214 first-year residents in internal medicine or family medicine from 13 residency programs taking standardized patient-based clinical skills assessment in 2011. We analyzed correlations between residents’ JSE scores; standardized patients’ perspectives on residents’ empathy during OSCE encounters, using the Jefferson Scale of Patient Perceptions of Physician Empathy; and residents’ perspectives on their own empathy, using a modified version of this scale.

Results

Residents’ JSE scores correlated with their perceptions of their own empathy during encounters but correlated poorly with patients’ assessments of resident empathy.

Conclusion

The poor correlation between residents’ and standardized patients’ assessments of residents’ empathy raises questions about residents’ abilities to gauge the effectiveness of their empathic communications. The study also points to a lack of congruence between the assessment of empathy by standardized patients and residents as receivers and conveyors of empathy, respectively.

Practice implications

This study adds to the literature on empathy as a teachable skill set and raises questions about use of OSCEs to assess trainee empathy.  相似文献
